Is teaching an honorable job? Teachers usually aren't rich; they aren't the boss of the business/building; etcetera. So, what's the honor in teaching? It seems respectable to me, regardless.

I think so, but the system makes it hard to maintain the honor.

A touching story I watched on TV was a school in Africa where the teachers showed up and dedicated themselves to teaching the kids even when there was no money to pay their salaries. They did it for the kids.

I think nit's honorable to take time to pass on what we know.
But most teachers don't teach in their field of choice, and the information is taken out of context, their timeline is stressed, there is too much paperwork and crowded classrooms, most have to shell out funds from their small paycheck.
Surely that is noble, yet ineffective, they can't change the system and I think the system in which teachers work within is flawed, I think that the roles that teachers and students play are not natural and confusing.
i also have my whole life over resented the fakeness and authoritative rush that I have witnessed in teachers at all grade levels.

I think it is honorable to mentor, but flawed to do it only in a school.

examples, "raise your hand before you speak, sit still, be quiet, that's not the assignment, put that down, I know you know this, once tou know this you canhave or do____! one, two, three, eyes on me, I think we can do better.Just sit there and put your head on the desk then, we aren't doing it until you all behave"
my son said once that the teachers at school were like bossy pig woman with the same haircuts, he made me promise to not talk to him like I was one.
Part of me felt this was a rude thing to say, part of me understood that this was a six year old obsevation of the false caring and homogeneous nature of the teachers, even at that "alternative" school.
I promised to be real with him and never talk to him as a "Teacher"
Grace Llewellyn and John Holt are examples of teachers working outside the system promoting natural learning and self education.

Wow, Vaunderbroad, you make a lot of great points. I agree.

Teaching could be a lot more effective under different circumstances. Also, it helps when the teachers have a more personal and one-on-one relationship with their students.

solarmom is right there are many teachers are that are not paid much but they are happy what ever they do. That is the only reason that teaching is called a honorable job. There is respect and the most important we feel satisfied that we are serving best to people.

I think teachers are as important as doctors are. Because teachers bring up the generations, develop our personalities and enrich our minds with knowledge. Unfortunately, these features are neglected and the current situation is quite pitiable. I hope that in the nearest future authorities will pay more attention to this issue.
